Edith!

EDITH! is an interdisciplinary stage performance inspired by the life and poetry of Finnish-Swedish modernist poet Edith Södergran. Combining dance, theatre, music, and spoken word, the work explores the social and cultural atmosphere of Södergran's time through the themes and ideas present in her poetry.

Södergran's vision of the world was at once courageous and empowering, realistic and utopian. Themes such as the diversity of gender, humanity's relationship with nature, and the belief in a brighter and more equal future recur throughout her work and remain profoundly relevant today. Her poetry celebrates the vitality of life, the strength of the human spirit, and the transformative power of hope, even in the face of adversity.

Although Södergran's life was short and marked by personal and historical challenges, her writings radiate resilience, imagination, and an unwavering faith in change. Her poems offer comfort and companionship to those navigating uncertainty and searching for their place in the world.

Among the pioneers of Nordic modernism, Edith Södergran was also one of the first writers in Finland to challenge traditional ideas of gender and identity. Her work gave voice to experiences that lay outside conventional norms and advocated for a broader understanding of belonging, inclusion, and human dignity. Through her poetry, she created space for those who did not see themselves reflected in the expectations of society.

EDITH! invites audiences to encounter Södergran's timeless words through movement, music, and theatrical expression, offering a poetic and thought-provoking experience for contemporary audiences.
